Ross Castle
A Window into Ireland’s Past
Perched on the edge of Lough Leane in Killarney National Park, Ross Castle is a striking 15th-century fortress that offers a captivating glimpse into Ireland’s medieval past. Built by the O’Donoghue Ross clan, this imposing tower house is steeped in legend and history.
Its thick stone walls, narrow spiral staircases, and commanding battlements were designed for defence, standing as a testament to the turbulent times in which it was constructed. The castle was one of the last to surrender to Oliver Cromwell’s forces in the 1650s, marking a pivotal chapter in Irish history.
Beyond its historical significance, Ross Castle is surrounded by natural beauty. From the castle grounds, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views across Lough Leane to the wooded slopes of Tomies and Purple Mountain. Boat tours depart from the nearby pier, offering a serene journey to Innisfallen Island, home to the ruins of a 7th-century monastery.
